A university consolidation bill calls for New College to become part of Florida State University and Florida Polytechnic to become part of the University of Florida.
Each school would cease to exist as an independently accredited academic institution, with their properties transferred to FSU and UF.
A similar consolidation occurred with University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg making them satellite campuses for the main University of South Florida.
The legislation is being pitched as a mechanism to increase efficiency and effective use of limited resources. It is scheduled for a hearing with the House Education Committee
